One of the most breathtaking features of a total solar eclipse is the “diamond ring effect,” a phenomenon that occurs just before and just after totality. This image was captured just after totality. As the Moon moves across the face of the Sun, a point comes when only a single bright spot of sunlight remains visible, looking much like a shining diamond. Some lens flaring adds to the effect.
